Hello, Colgate! Welcome back to campus for the 2019-2020 school year. There’s a lot going on around the hill, as Colgate kicks off its third century and reflects on the bicentennial celebrations of last year. First and foremost, we’d like to say welcome to the Class of 2023. The next few weeks will be busy, exciting, and exhausting. It will set the stage for the rest of your time in Hamilton, New York, and introduce you to the friends, foods, clubs, and classes that will become near and dear to you. Be sure to pay a visit to John at the Old Stone Jug.

We won’t bore you with our “sage” senior advice, we’ll just tell you to let the good times roll.

On a more serious note, there’s been a lot of change at Colgate since we left in May. New dorms, Jane Pinchin and Burke Hall replaced the Field of Dreams, Hieber Cafe got a much-needed facelift, and the basketball court in Huntington Gym also received some TLC. There’s also some new faces around campus; new hires within the Administration, Office of Admission, and other faculty and staff positions are shifting the way Colgate works behind-the-scenes. You’ll likely see these new folks around campus during the chaos that is the start of the new school year, be sure to make them feel welcome.

There’s other exciting changes happening down the hill as well. The Eatery took the summer off to update its kitchen, and health cafe Soul Bowl opened up down the street next to Oliveri’s. The local businesses of Hamilton do their best to cater to the needs of all residents, so be sure to go show them some love.

On a personal note for us, this issue marks the start of our tenure as Editors-in-Chief of The Colgate Maroon-News, a role we are excited to take on as a way to give back to the Colgate and Hamilton Communities. We’re working on making a number of community-oriented changes here at the MN this year, including introduction of a brand new section, the Baker’s Dozen. The Baker’s Dozen will focus on featuring 13 student, staff, and facutly profiles each week to highlight the important contributions of individuals on campus and recognize our fellow Raiders. If you know someone you think deserves a feature in the Baker’s Dozen, email maroonnews@colgate.edu to nominate them. We are also looking to expand our online presence and get more stories and content to the Colgate community in real time. For updates, follow us on Instagram @maroon_news. All in all, Colgate has an exciting year ahead, and we look forward to writing its stories.
