Swimming and Diving Makes a Splash at Patriot League Championships

The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recently competed in the Pa­triot League Championships in Annapolis, MD. The competition took place over three days, throughout which the two sides of the squad maintained relative consistency.

On day one, the women posted 212 points to put them in second place after a strong showing in the preliminary races with four of the top eight finishes in the 500 free and three in the top eight for the 200 individual medley. They also secured places in the finals of the 50-yard freestyle.

The finals began with the 500 freestyle race, a competition in which Colgate expect­ed to earn some serious points. Senior Erica Derlath finished in third place with a time of 4:52.73. Sophomore Melanie Lockard clocked in at 4:56.81 for a sixth place finish, while senior Erika Mortenson finished close behind her teammate with a 4:58.32 time to secure seventh place. Senior Jenna Daly took eighth after recording a 4:59.96 time.

In the 200 individual medley final, sopho­more Megan Jex recorded the fastest Colgate finish at 2:03.75 for a third place finish. Junior Emma Santoro came in fourth with 2:04.64 and junior Becca Murray came in seventh with a time of 2:06.70.

Other notable finals competitors for the women were first-year Sami Wary and sophomore Hannah Fitton who both raced in the 50 free. Senior Sarah Button placed second in the B final, tenth overall, with a time of 24.11 seconds.

Juniors Lia Kunnapas and Ryan Marynowski joined Murray and Fitton to race in the 400 medley relay and came in second with a time of 3:47.50 just after Navy, who secured the win in the race.

Colgate’s only diver, first-year Chloe Rus­sack, competed in prelims but finished three points out with a score of 217.75.

As for the men’s side of the squad, the team was able to earn 80 points and secure fifth place on the first day of competition. Seniors Casey Powers and Costas Hadjipat­eras both competed in the B final. Powers finished with a tenth-place swim at 4:43.65, edging out Hadjipateras in twelfth place with a time of 4:34.68.

The Raiders were not able to secure a spot in the finals for the 200 individual medley, but finished the day with the 400 medley relay with a team of junior Dan Sweeney, seniors Teddy Perley and Patrick White and sophomore Tavy Smith. The team clocked in at 3:28.81 for sixth place overall, contributing 26 points to the men’s score.

By day three of the meet, the women’s team had maintained their spot in second place with a final 692.5 total. Kunnapas won the 200 backstroke for her second in­dividual title of the championships with a time of 1:59.03.

Derlath and Santoro took third and fifth overall in the 1650 free with times of 16.48.68 and 16:55.01, respectively. Marynowski took third in the 200 butterfly.

The men were not so successful, finishing in sixth place with a total tally of 262 points after the third day of swimming.

The Raiders to earn the highest positions for the day were Hadjipateras, who earned a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly, and Powers and Healy, who earned the fourth and eighth spots in the 1650 freestyle.

The 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the day, saw a Colgate finish at fifth place as sophomore Sam Ellis, White, Sweeny and Hadjipateras swam their way to a 3:03.67 time.
